MCA's Favorite Artist These Days...

...seems to be Trisha Yearwood.

Apparently it wasn't enough to release a TY Greatest Hits CD ahead of her Big Machine release, which, as we've discussed here, sold better than the BM release... At the first of the year they are putting out a Trisha Yearwood Love Songs compilation CD, but... apparently, it gets better.

I got into work ridiculously early today and went up and got the mail, which included the new Josh Turner single --

"Another Try" (Featuring Trisha Yearwood)

Interesting.

Beautiful song. :)

But MCA... grrr...

I don't care for MCA at all. They didn't support or promote Jasper County at all. Now they're making money off her, without her input. I refuse to buy either the GH or this new one.

I just don't understand why HHATPOL isn't selling better. Its her best work to date.

First - thanks for the great info I only see here.

Second - In a situation like this, does the artist make any money? I know she has said that doing work she is proud of is the top priority, but people should be paid for their work when that work is used again for new profit. I'm thinking of tv residuals here.

Hmm. Interesting question. To be honest, I don't know the full answer.

The song was apparently recorded when she was under contract to MCA. It's not a full fledged duet, she's the harmony singer, albeit a very prominant one. It's about the equivalent of Keith Urban on "Let the Wind Chase You."

Now. Trisha is not a songwriter, so she won't get songwriter royalties from the song, radio or TV. She's a performer. Regular AM/FM radio does NOT pay any performance royalties on the songs they play. Satellite Radio and Online streaming radio stations DO pay performance royalties, however, those go to the record label. What MCA does with it from there, I can't say.

How it works in TV, I don't know. However, in this instance, since Trisha is just a background singer, I would think she was "hired" to sing the harmony vocals and isn't entitled to any sort of royalties. Otherwise Wes Hightower would have bought the whole state of Tennessee by now. LOL

She may have a fraction of a percentage on album sales... or her contract with MCA may have stipulated that she would sing on other UMG releases as part of her deal. No telling.

So in talking this all outloud, my guess is that she's not going to be able to go on a big shopping spree off this song. LOL.

Glad to have you hear curious!

You know what... I did all of that... and then realized you might have been asking about making money off the ALBUMS not the singles. Totally different answer.

MCA owns the recordings so they can package and repackage anything she recorded on their dime as many times as they want. Just like labels do the "Essential" series, or the Sony Legacy series or whatever.

In that case, I'm sure as the performer she gets something from each album sold. Again, each artists' contract is going to be different.

Actually, I was thinking about both the albums and the single and did not ask two questions the way I should have. LOL I wondered if she was going to earn enough from the albums to go on a big shopping spree.

Then I wondered when (?) she recorded the song with Josh and figured that whatever that deal was did not really matter that much to her because I had heard Josh say in an interview that when he met Garth that Garth told him Trisha admired his first single so much that when the album came out he went out and spent "good money" to buy her a copy for the house and for the car.

Thanks for both answers. My third question would be how an artist who does not have a degree in music business ever learns whether or not they are being fairly compensated, or is the desire to work so strong that music is just more important than business in the final analysis - as long as they earn enough to pay the musicians, etc. who help them keep their career going.

Thanks again.

It is frustrating that HHPOL isn't selling better than it is, but money isn't everything. A lot of "Best Album of the Year" list are coming out and so far HHPOL has been on most of the ones I have seen.

Mca is evil. I'm sorry, they just are. I really hope Reba doesn't resign with them. They totally have ignored her in the past just like the did to Trisha. Mca is just milking Trisha for anything they can. They're bitter. lol

Clint Black and The Dixie Chicks are 2 high profile artists I can think of that publically (and in at least Clint's case, legally) took their labels to task for not fairly compensating them.

I don't think a music business degree is enough to ever know... I think you need a business manager, a lawyer, and an undercover agent. LOL

The artists will all tell you - they make their money on the road -- playing gigs and selling merch.

Of course, they can't get people to come to their shows without the record label to put the albums out and work radio to get the songs heard.

Hopefully no one goes into the music business looking to get rich. I remember Blake Shelton telling me "It's sure better than tarring a roof."
