Diamonds, Rubies, Sapphires...

Are you a Jewel expert? Actually, those would be gems. How about Jewel the country singer?

I'm writing an episode of ShortCuts with Jewel... and her story is incredibly fascinating to me. It's also all new to me. I know she's a multi-platinum pop star, but I can count on my fingers the number of things I really know about her - none of which include titles of her hits.

So... taking the pulse of my audience... are country fans familiar with her story? I don't want to bore people because technically... this is kind of old news. But I don't want to assume people know her country music credentials, either.

What say you?

I know she was homeless and lived in her car for a while. She's been around since '94-'95, but I'm not familiar with her older music.

I know of her history, but only from what I've read about it.. I think it would be really interesting to hear it in her own words.

I bet there are also a lot of listeners that don't know her story. Either way - I think its beneficial for everyone to hear it.

Just my two cents :)

I really like her pop music; have been a fan for a long time. Not sure how many or how much country-only fans know of her, though. :)

I don't know a thing about her. I don't listen to pop music so I don't know her music either.

I remember when she co-hosted Nashville Star I wandered why?
Also wasn't she on one of Garth's specials??

I did hear her say on a magazine show that now she can hear her songs on the radio station she listens too..

am I the only one who's tired of these rock stars thinking they can go country once their rock career flounders?

I don't know the story - but I do know she sings several different types of music (and well I guess) - I've heard her yodel even and I guess that was something she learn first (think that was from Nashville Star).

Other than that - anything you talked about would be new to me.

I thought she sang with Garth when he did that show on the Navy ship for the troops. I do not know anything else about her.

I really don't think that Jewel's very rock or pop, but leans more towards the folk side. She's very unique in the sense that she writes her own songs, and not many in the genre she's been placed so far do. Country may fit her best, especially if her current personal life is having any influence on her songwriting.

I first heard of Jewel when her song 'Absence of Fear' was featured on my fave tv show at the time. It was from her 1998 cd 'Spirit' which I would highly recommend for your cd collection.

A friend of mine was a BIG fan of hers and saw her when she toured here about 3 yrs ago, he said she was TERRIBLE and wished he hadn't wasted his money.
