CMA's... the Morning After

As much as I'd love to go back to bed... I must grab a shower and go in for at least a half day of work.

Much to chat about later... for now let's go with some overall recapping. I didn't get to watch much of the last 45 minutes or so of the show because it was busy in the press room, so I'm hoping my husband recorded it.

I didn't think there were any major surprises in the winners... with the possible exception of Lady A... that category could have gone several different ways. I liked the dual host format. Was pleased with the number of artists who did press... (although I'm shakin' my finger at Sugarland.) Jay Thomas has done a great job of using my audio on the air this morning.

I have to give huge props to Chris, my intern, who was back in the studio activating audio and putting the display information on just as fast as I got it edited and uploaded. He saved me from having to go upstairs and work after the show, or worse yet, be in at dawn this morning.

Yay for interns!

So, overall -- what did you think of the show?

I enjoyed the show. I think it's the first one in a LONG time that I actually sat down and watched the entire show.

I wasn't surprised by any of the winners - but really pleased with Lady A's win. I think what did it for me was how excited they were and how the entire isle filled with ecstatic people that were also genuinely happy for them.

Loved your coverage! You did a fantastic job AGAIN!

I liked the show, but I liked last year's better. You're right -- there weren't any big surprise winners. That's kind of disappointing, but understandable. On one level, it's more fun to see new people win, but on another you have to acknowledge that some people do earn it repeatedly, and it would be worse to take that away from them in the name of "variety."

Overall, I thought the show was very good (what I've seen so far), things moved along, and the sound was better than it has been on past shows. I haven't watched the whole show yet. I taped it and must have fallen asleep while watching the tape last night since, after reading some recaps of the show, I realized that there were some performances I missed.

The more I hear Darius Rucker, the more I like him. I caught some of the driver's ed show today...so glad the Highway's programming survived.

Some random commnents on the series of blogs posts from last night. Kid Rock's performance was one of the ones I missed. The "smokin" reference has beem played on my local radio station.

I didn't have a clue what you were talking about with the Joe the Strummer comment until I read Peter Cooper's blog.

I don't understand why Carrie needed to have so many outfit changes...reminded me of Reba when she went throught several outfits during her shows. I thought both she and Brad did a great job hosting the show.

RF and KC...blech.

Thanks for all the press room blogging and the pics. Still at least one picture that's missing.:p

Sure would like to see your dress. I read all your blogs but only saw a part of the show. The blogs told me everything I needed to know. Great Job!! It was my husband's birthday and we went to my son's house for dinner. They all watched the Hornets basketball game.

wow, that was a whole lot of J's world to catch up on! Thank you for all the wonderful news and backstage action. I had no idea about the transition until I turned on my radio and was kinda like... what are these station names?! So far, I'm happy with the change... and I'm not listening to just Country channels. Hope you are hanging in and thanks again! The cornfields say hello. :)

Good Short Cuts today :-)

Do you know why Rascal Flatts didn't perform? I found that the most surprising thing of the night..

I videoed this as I had meetings. Brad and Carrie were okay as presenters. Too many costume changes for Carrie. Sound mix was horrible, per usual for awards shows. Glad flat Rascals didn't sing, wish Taylor Swift hadn't- she was really flat. Eagles were good, but they're Cali rock IMO.

I ended up forwarding through the majority of the performances. In the end I deleted it from the dvr.

Jon was wondering about the Rascal Flatts thing too. Odd since they're on Lyric Street, which is part of the big Disney family with ABC, so usually they're prime time.

Very odd.

Thanks for listening to ShortCuts Sean!

I read somewhere that it was Rascal Flatt's decision not to perform to allow a break and they could just sit back and enjoy. But who really knows the real reason. Probably not a bad idea because of the past few performances on award shows.

I enjoyed the show and most of the performances. Really enjoyed Brooks & Dunn with Reba... can't wait to hear the studio version with Reba; but really like the original--so torn there--since I always start crying when Dunn gets to the last verse. Thought Miranda, Lady A..., Carrie were really good especially with the intro for Carrie's performance. Didn't care for the dancers with Alan -- that's more suited for the ACMs not the CMAs. Loved watching Brad/Keith doing what they so love to do. Was worried about lilWayne joining Kid Rock with his foul mouth but he must of had a talking to :) and surprisingly enjoyed the performance. Sugarland's performance was strange. George was George never can go wrong with him but hope he isn't hopping on the Chesney island theme. Wish Kelly would have worn something different - not appropriate for CMAs (again maybe for the ACMs not for the classier CMAs) and was disappointed in her oversinging the song? Taylor's presentation a little over the top but Disney/Lyric Street is a part of ABC so not surprising; I'm going to attribute her vocal performance to being overtired since it sounds like she has been working 24/7 on her new CD release, plus her recent breakup.

Was surprised to see Brad so nervous/reserved at the beginning and Carrie seemingly relaxed. Thought it would be the reverse. He did get better as the night went on. Seemed better if he didn't have to read the teleprompter and just adlib.

Best acceptance was when Brad went down and kissed his wife and the unborn baby. It doesn't get any better than that. THAT is what it is all about :)

If nothing else the show really showed--good or bad--how diverse/accepting country music is becoming with the diversity or the presentions... traditional - neo traditional - pop country - crossovers - etc.
