Blogging From the Fishbowl

While I've got this ridiculoulsy long file saving, I thought I'd pop in and paint a picture of my world at this moment.

I'm in the big studio at the Hall of Fame -- with the big picture window, that we (lovingly) refer to as "The Fishbowl." In front of the window, Opry stars Mel McDaniel and Jan Howard are signing autographs. Which means there's a few dozen people standing around taking photos that are going to have me - in my ISU Sweatshirt and no makeup - in the background. In the small studio next to me, a guy with a ridiculously deep voice is doing shows for Deep Tracks. For the past couple of hours I've been listening to Garth talk about himself in 3rd person as I edit our XM World Premiere, and on the TV above me, Keith Urban is on GAC.

So. What's your fishbowl look like? And can I send some tourists over to take pictures of it?

Hmmmm my fishbowl ??? Living on an Air Force base where everybody knows who you are and what your husband does. They even know where we live because there is a sign in the front yard with our names on it. We live across the street from the Officers Club which frequently means there are wedding receptions, proms and other events where people are celebrating and tend to forget that those buildings across the street are houses. And that they really shouldn't be yelling and carousing at all hours.

Normally I love living on base, it's just been a rotten day and I'd love to go back to being anonymous.

Well at the Hall of Fame anyway, My feet are kiling me.

Cool stuff, J! Sorry you had to work on a Saturday though.

We also have a fishbowl at work. The light booth, or control booth, if you will. It's where the stage manager (me or my boss) and the light board operator live during the show. During pre-show, intermission, and after the show, the weird comments and conversations that can be heard while patrons are passing should really be documented somewhere.

Tonight's fishbowl consisted of calming an overly hysterical actress who strained a muscle in her leg while on stage and couldn't continue the show. Well, she wasn't in the fishbowl, but much running in and out of the fishbowl by me to forge a plan of attack. Oh, live theatre is fun. Is it Monday yet? Screw that - can I go to KC yet? :)

My fishbowl is the small community I live in. Everyone knows everything about averybody. I do like it here, but sometimes it is to much. I'm glad I work outside this place, and noone else from my "village" work there.
I'll trade to hear Garth too ;)

Lish -- I used to work in a similar environment -- a control room at the Arena, that had sliding glass windows. Drunk hockey fans can provide hours of entertainment.

So finish the story -- did the show go on?

Oh J... the show ALWAYS goes on... it's just sometimes not as pretty. Or strangely different. So many stories... just not enough wine. :)

Last night's big fun was breaking the turntable during the first act (the revolving section of the stage) and attempting to change the staging around such broken element without stopping the show. Good times, I tell ya.

A theatre I used to work at in Memphis had a saying "Live Theatre - it won't kill ya, but it might make you wish you were dead". A bit dramatic, but hey, it's the theatre. :)
